How to design a dress for beginners?
The design of your dress depends on patterns you choose. Get them by finding free ones or which are selling for the cheap price on the websites. Also, we recommend a sewing kit, where you can find them. At first, press them with an iron to remove all the wrinkles. Then following the instructions cut out the parts of the dress. Hold the fabric in half when it is necessary. If you want to use a directional print, be sure that all the pieces have the same direction.
Facings
We are makings a sleeveless dress, which has facings for neck and armholes. They usually need interfacing, which is used to add stiffness to a fabric. So, the next step is to cut out interfacing pieces and to fuse them with the back side of the fabric.
Sewing darts and zipper
As for the dress, you need to sew only bust darts to make a nice form. They are shown on patterns like long triangles, which you need to transfer on fabric using a pencil or making little dots with contrast thread. Then sew your darts and press.
It will be easier for you to sew zipper before connecting two parts of the dress. You can choose one of the three ways of putting in zipper:
Standard centered zipper.
Invisible zipper.
Lapped zipper.
Sewing parts together
Now you need to make an important step: to sew back and front parts of your future dress. Firstly, pay your attention to seam allowance, which the chosen patterns have. Most of them have 5/8’’ allowances. After your work is ready, make the seams open.
Preparing and attaching neck facings
Firstly, make shoulder seams to connect front and back parts. In the majority of cases, you will have one front part and two back ones, because of a zipper. As you made it before with shoulder seams of main parts, leave the seams open.
Secondly, pin facings to the neckline connecting one shoulder seams with others. When you have them connected, you will find out that the seam allowance of dress’s main back part is already used by the zipper. On the facings, it is still available and it can look strange. Don`t trim it off or try to sew it. It will be used as a clean finish at the top of the zipper.
Making snips every 1’’-2’’, sew the parts together. Then make small cuts perpendicular to the stitching, ending close before it is. Fold the facing toward the inside of the dress and trim the seam down to about ¼’’.
To make the facing sit alright, press it away from the body of the dress. Do understitch around the neck edge, which means stitching near the seam on facing.
Sewing the sides and making perfect armholes
Sew to main parts together, remembering about the seam allowances. Then make seams open.
Front and back pieces of facing must be sewn together. To recognize which one is back and which is front, find out that the front one has one notch, while rear one has two of them. Press the seams open.
Attach the armhole facings
Remember how you did it before with necklace facings because these steps are very similar. Pin facing connecting its seams with shoulder and underarm ones and stitch them. Repeat the instruction to the second armhole. Make the perpendicular incisions and cut them off, like with necklace facing. Understitch them completely.
Clean finish
If you remember, we left a part of the seam allowance of necklace facing to create a clean finish. Trim the corner diagonally and stitch the facing through all the layers on the top of the zipper. Finally, you have to flip them back to the inside and make some hand stitches along the margins of facing, where it is close to the zipper.
Final revision
The last step in our tutorial is to hem the dress. The quicker way to do it is by using a sewing machine, but you will also get a nice result by making stitches by hand. And when you do this last part, we are pleased to congratulate you on your new homemade dress!
