How To Read Crochet Patterns

So, how do you read crochet patterns:

  • read them upwards.
  • all the odd rows are front and all the even are back.

Read the rounds from right to left, i. e counterclockwise.

  • there is a term “rapport”. Rapport is the repeated part of the pattern.

Now let’s practice reading the scheme of this pattern and try to crochet it.

Crochet this pattern by rows both forwards and backwards using chain stitches and double crochets.

Cast on a chain of 30 chain stitches + 3 chain lifting loops + 1 chain stitch according to the pattern scheme. In total 34 chain stitches.

Begin knitting the first row, which you read from right to left. Knit a one double crochet in the 4th loop of the chain.

The next step – knitting one chain stitch, skipping three loops and knit a double crochet in the 4th loop. Then make two similar crochets next to it.

Then make one chain stitch, skip three loops and knit one double crochet, three chain stitches and one double crochet in the 4th loop.

And again, knit one chain stitch, skip three loops*, repeat from the * once and knit 3 double crochets, then skip 3 loops and knit one double crochet, one chain stitch and one double crochet in the last loop of the row.

Make 3 lifting chain stitches in the end of the first row, which is the beginning of the second row,

Turn the pattern and keep knitting. Remember, that the you read the second row from left to right. After you knit three chain stitches, knit three double crochets in the bow that consists of one chain stitch of the previous row.

Then *knit one chain stitch, one double crochet in the middle double crochet of the previous row.

one chain stitch, 7 double crochets in the bow of the previous row *.

repeat once from the *, and knit one chain stitch and one double crochet in the middle double crochet of the previous row, then one chain stitch and three double crochets in the bow of the previous row and one double crochet in the last loop of the row.

3rd row: 3 chain stitches, 1 double crochet.

1 chain stitch, *then one double crochet, three chain stitches and one double crochet in the double crochet of the previous row.

then make one chain stitch, three double crochets in the middle double crochets of the previous row.

then make one chain stitch * and repeat once from the *, then knit one double crochet, three chain stitches and one double crochet in the double crochet of the previous row. Then make one chain stitch and two double crochets. That was the 3rd row.

4th row: 4 double crochets, *7 chain stitches in the bow of the previous row,

1 chain stitch, 1 double crochet in the middle double crochet of the previous row,

then 1 chain stitch*, and repeat once from the *, then knit 7 double stitches in the bow of the previous row, then 1 chain stitch and 1 double crochet in the last loop.

After that repeat the 1-4 rows. You can make 12 rows in order to get a pattern like this.

Did it work out?
