How To Knit A Cowl

Snood or a cowl scarf is nowadays on the peak of its popularity just like it was several decades ago. It is not only warm and quite successful at protecting you from cold and wind, but it’s also a very attractive accessory that may make any stylish attire look complete. This is especially true if a snood is created with your own hands.

You’ll need:

  • 8 skeins of fluffy thick woolen yarn. Each skein should be 50g. By the way, you may either take skeins of the same colour, or as we did it, take 4 skeins of one colour and 4 skeins of a different colour;
  • circular knitting needles. The size should be 9 mm;
  • a needle for the wool;
  • scissors.

An instruction on how to knit a cowl scarf:

Make a chain of 31 stitches using 2 skeins of different colours.

This is the way we knit the first row: 1 stitch knit 6wise, straightforward yarn over, we decrease 1 stitch and do not knit it (the working thread is behind). This is the way we knit till the end of the first row.

We start the second row with a straightforward yarn over, we decrease 1 stitch and do not knit it (the working thread is behind), then, we knit the loop and a yarnover of the previous row together. We do it knitwise.

The third row: we knit the loop and the yarnover of the previous row together knitwise, then, a straightforward yarnover, we decrease one stitch without knitting it (the working thread is behind).

We repeat the second and the third rows in turns till the end of the article. The length is 60-65 cm.

Now the most interesting part begins. We let the knitting needle with the last row on it be the way it is. We take the free knitting needle and make a chain of 31 stitches. These are the stitches of the scarf’s opposite end. Keep in mind that the knitting needle should be directed vice versa than the knitting needle on which there is the last row of our cowl scarf.

Then, we should turn the second knitting needle so that the ends of the both knitting needles “look” in one direction. Then, carefully, cast off the stitches with the help of a third knitting needle. You need to cast off the stitches one by one, following their order. You cast off the stitches simultaneously on the both of the knitting needles. Then, the only thing left for you to do is cut off the thread. Roll the cowl scarf the way you like and try your new accessory on! Your new cowl scarf made with your own hands makes you look really irresistible.
