In this lesson, you’ll learn how to draw trees with a pencil. This may seem to be quite simple. However, when it comes to the process itself, it is difficult because we try to depict trees as close to reality as it is possible. A tree doesn’t have any precise shape. Besides, a great number of leaves and branches on it makes the process long and painstaking. We’ll try to get an effect of a real tree with the help of shadows and light.
Step 1: So, we’ll tell you how to draw an oak. The first thing that you need to do is to draw the line of the ground. You need to draw the caudex of the future tree. In case of an oak-tree, it’s usually rather thick and uneven. The branches are located starting from a very low level. You also need to draw several big branches. You may draw several more small branches on them.
Step 2: Then, you need to add foliage and the treetop. This is a very important moment since the form of the treetop defines how the tree on the whole will look. In our case, we have drawn it expanded in both directions. Of course, you may draw it as you wish. As for the leaves, you may make them either a bit blurred or draw every leaf precisely. This depends on what effect you wish to get.
Step 3: Then, we need to make foliage thicker. This will make the tree look more volumetric thus making it look lighter and more real like. Here, you need to keep in mind that the lower part of the treetop is always a bit darker than the upper one. The upper treetop is the exact place where the sunlight is directed.
Step 4: after that, we need to point out the outline of the caudex and the branches that start growing from it. We do it by painting over them with a pencil. We also need to make the leaves near the branches thicker.
Step 5: We need to make one more addition to our picture. We need to finish drawing the outline of the treetop and draw a shadow under the tree. How to draw trees with a pencil.
We hope now you understand the basics of how to draw trees with a pencil.
