Crochet Minion Hat

We start crocheting with yellow yarn. According to the scheme, we crochet until we get the needed diameter.

There is one trick: in order for the hat not to look like a skullcap after the diameter of the bottom becomes 12 cm, you need to make additions not in each row. You need to miss one row.

So, we have crocheted the bottom (its diameter is 12 cm), then, we go on crocheting a row without any additions. The next row we crochet with additions and our bottom gets to be of necessary diameter. Now, we’ll crochet gill it gets deep enough but without any additions.

If you need a hat of a bigger diameter, go on making rows and rows with additions in turns until you get the necessary diameter. After that, crochet in circles until the hat gets deep enough.

Somewhere between the 10th – 11th row (the bigger the diameter is the lower it should be), we crochet 2 rows with black yarn.

Once again, we crochet 5-6 rows with yellow yarn (the bigger the diameter is the more yellow rows you should make).

We have crocheted 5 rows with yellow yarn and our hat is 13 cm deep.

We go on crocheting with blue yarn till the necessary length. In our case, it is 16 cm.

We’ll consider the place where the rows begin and end (the junction can be seen on the picture) to be the middle of the hat’s back side.

Fold the hat in halves so that the junction is located exactly on the side of it. Let’s define the place where the ears should be located.

They should be closer to the back junction than to the middle of the front side. We count 14 dc from the junction and mark the placewith a yarn of a different colour.

From this mark we count more 15 dc and mark the place once again. We have defined the location of the ears. We do the same on the other side. The ears should be symmetrical.

Crocheting a ear:

  • The first row is crocheted from one mark to the other one. We make 1 dc in each stitch and turn the article.
  • The second row is crocheted backwards: we slip, then, crochet 1 dc into each stitch and in the end of the row we slip once again. Turn the article.
  • The third row is crocheted backwards: we slip, then, crochet 1 dc into each stitch and in the end of the row we slip once again. Turn the article.
  • The fourth row is crocheted backwards: we slip, then, crochet 1 dc into each stitch and in the end of the row we slip once again. Crocheting is finished. Tie up the loop, cut off the thread.

The second ear is crocheted the same way

The front view

Let’s crochet the edge of the hat: make single crochets hiding all the sticking out ends. The ends that you didn’t manage to hide – cut off.

The base of the hat is finished. Let’s get to the ties. We’ll need 6 cut offs (each is 100 cm) for one ear. Consequently, we’ll need 12 cut offs for 2 ears. We choose 3 colours. We need 2 cut offs of each colour for one ear.

We fold in halves 2 cut offs of the same colour.

We get the loop through the last loop of the ear’s middle.

Let’s get the ends of the cut offs through the loop. We do the same with all the rest cut offs.

Let’s tie the cut offs in a braid. We fix the end of the braid with a knot. We make the ends to be of the equal length.

We do the same with the second ear. The ties are ready.

Let’s get to the decoration of the hat. Glasses like eyes.

  • The first row is crocheted with brown yarn.
  • The second row is crocheted with white yarn, but you need to catch the back half-loop.
  • The third row is crocheted with white yarn.

If you decide to crochet a one eyed minion, you may crochet one more row with white yarn for the eye to be bigger.

Then, we need to crochet the eyes with grey yarn. This is how we will do it: strictly along 1 dc catching each upper half-loop of the previous row. Repeat it with both eyes. When you’re stitching the eyes to the article, orientate to the black line.

Prepare 10-15 cut offs of the yarn. Each should be 8 cm long. Fasten then (the way it is shown on the photo) to the top of the hat in a chaotic order.

The last thing necessary for our hat is a smile! A minion smile is made with one stitch. You use black yarn here.

Now, you also may smile! Our hat is ready!
