How To Prepare Homemade Glue

Glue is widely used in household and in almost all spheres of works. The reason for the popularity of the adhesive substances is their ability of gluing articles of different shapes, surfaces and sizes. Modern types of adhesives provide high durability of sticking and an aesthetic look.

Due to the common use of adhesives in the household, very often there are cases when you need to use glue, but you do not have it at hand. Therefore, many people start thinking about how to make glue at home. So, let’s learn how to make different types of glue at home.

How To Prepare Homemade Polyvinyl Acetate Glue

In order to prepare homemade PVA glue, we need the following ingredients:

• 4 g (0.1 oz) glycerin;
• 100 g (3.5 oz) wheat flour;
• 1 liter (1.1 qt) distilled water;
• 20 ml (0.7 fl oz) ethyl alcohol;
• 5 g (0.2 oz) photographic gelatin.

Probably, you have some of these components at home or you can buy them in a pharmacy store. The day before preparing the glue, you have to soak gelatin in water.

When gelatin is dissolved, it is necessary to prepare a water bath. Place all the components, excluding alcohol and glycerin, in a pot and cook in a water bath.

Stir the mixture until it thickens to the desired consistence.

When the mass becomes thick, add ethyl alcohol and glycerin. Stir the mass thoroughly until it becomes smooth. When the mass becomes homogeneous, the glue is ready. You may use your homemade PVA glue as soon as it cools down.

Homemade Wood Glue

Very often, in the household, you may need to glue wood, cardboard or paper. The best solution is to prepare wood glue at home. You will need a tile of wood glue. Before starting preparation of the adhesive you need to break the tile in small pieces and place them in a container. Fill the container with cold water and leave for 10-12 hours until the glue absorbs the water and forms a gelatinous mass.

After that, cook the glue in a water bath and stir it constantly to prevent from burning. If you need a thinner consistence of glue, add hot water. It is not necessary to bring it to a boil. If the glue has no lumps, it is ready.

If you need to glue leather, add glycerin in your wood glue. For 1/2 liters (0.6 qt) of glue, you will need 1 tsp of glycerin.
